In the second episode of our Triskele Podcast, we started talking about our regular practices. We shared our approaches to maintaining a regular practice, and what our current daily, weekly, and monthly practices look like. Since my descriptions aren't super detailed, I thought I would make a few posts to expand a little bit with all of you, starting with my Daily Practices.
As I describe in the podcast, I try to focus my daily practice around activities that I am already doing in an effort to be more consistent, and also because doing that means that I don't have to "find time" to do my devotionals. It starts each morning when I first pour my cup of coffee. I breath in the smell of coffee and say a short prayer, often internally:
This new day brings with it new potential.
May my actions be hospitable.
May my thoughts be wise.
May my heart be filled with love.
Mighty Kindred, thank you for the blessings you bring to my life.
May I remember those gifts through my day.
From there, I continue to get ready, and then drive my daughter to school. The drive from her school to my office takes about 15 minutes, and it is in that drive that morning practice #2 comes into play. I call to the Hittite goddess Arinitti (you can learn more about here here) and ask her for blessings upon my day.
Arinitti, from the bright burning sun high above,
to the glowing fire deep inside the earth,
You bring warmth and life to the world.
You reach across the cosmos
I ask that your fires burn within me,
and connect me to your light.
Once I get to my office, I have a small offering bowl, and there I share part of either my breakfast or my coffee with her and go about my day, trying to keep these prayers in mind. Some days it helps. Some days I forget as soon as they leave my lips, but I try. I end my day with one final prayer, as I crawl into bed, to show gratitude to the kindreds.
thank you for the many gifts you have brought to my life.
The peace and wisdom that comes from the Shining Ones
The connection and sustenance gifted by the Nature Spirits
The guidance and path set forth by my Ancestors
These led me to where I am, and lead me to where I will go.
Might Kindreds, thank you.
Sometimes I'll expand on this if there is something specific that I want to address, but ultimately I just want to try to express my gratitude for the life I have, even when things aren't perfect. Depending on what is happening in my life, this practice changes constantly. Sometimes things are added. Other times, they're removed. Ultimately though, I'm trying, and I think that goes a long way.
